Who'd have known it? Grandpa's got his own webpage at the AIF Project. As the entry indicates, he did not stay with the 9th Battalion. As it happened, his fellow Queenslanders fell ill just before embarkation in Perth but Grandpa (Ernie) did not. Hence, he was transferred from the 9th, raised in South East Queensland to the Western Australian 44th Battalion.
